But what is HWR Berlin ?

The Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin (Berlin School of Economics and Law) is a german high school founded in 2009 by the fusion of the FHW Berlin and the FHVR Berlin. These two schools have a long story. The HWR school is the biggest Business School of Germany and represent an important piliar of the management and law education.


The FHW Berlin School :


The applied sciences university of Berlin (FHW Berlin) was founded in 1971 to take over to the Business Academy. At the beginning, the study program consisted in just one program : Economy.

Over the years, it developed itself and some new international and interdisciplinary programs have been introduced. In the years 2000, the ancient Berufsakademie Berlin integrated the school and 2 departments have been presented. During 40 years, FHW Berlin has been considered as one of the main former for the young execuvite in Germany.


The FHVF Berlin :



The applied sciences university of Berlin (FHVR Berlin) was founded in 1973 as a training institution for the senior officials of the West Berlin Civil Service.

Originally, there was just two depatments : “General Administration” and “Legal Administration”. Then, an other has been included : “Police Train Service”.

At the beginning, the university was located in the city center of West Berlin. In 1994, the FHVR Berlin was transferred in the training and administration center of Friedrichsfelde. Then, some new studies have been added like complementary studies for the baccalaureate and the master.

In 2009, FHW Berlin and FHVR Berlin fusionned to become HWR Berlin


This school has more than 11 000 students from 60 programs that can choose between in 5 different departments :

1. Business and Economics

2. Cooperative Studies Business – Technology

3. Public Administration

4. Legal Studies

5. Police and Security Management


The key values of HWR Berlin are openness, enthusiasm, courage and critical thought, promote mutual relations informed by respect, esteem and dialogue, and foster self-confidence and personal development.


Its cultural diversity program includes two Department-specific and cross-departmental measures:

1. Cross Cultural Mentoring is a service available to all students who are completing an undergraduate course at the HWR Berlin. It promotes exchanges between experienced professionals (mentors) and students (mentees).

2. Cross Professional (Cross P) is an interdisciplinary workshop for all University members of the HWR Berlin. The aim is to introduce and reflect on stakeholder, process and resource-oriented experiences in a University context.
